• Place furniture at an angle. This gives it a unique look and breaks away from the usual box design of rooms. Do this in larger rooms only as it may make small rooms appear even smaller.
• Use a sofa and two chairs in coordinating fabrics for your living room. To make your living room appear larger, avoid too much seating. A sofa, love seat and recliner may be too much. For added interest, make sure that the sofa and chairs are upholstered in coordinating, but not exactly the same fabrics.
• Point out tall spaces with large pictures. If you have a cathedral ceiling, you need to point that out to your potential buyers. Hang large pictures on the walls, or add dramatic two story curtains.
• Make small rooms appear larger. If you have small rooms, try painting them in lighter colors such as mint or vanilla. Add a mirror to create the illusion of depth and use furniture sparingly. Choose small-scale fabrics instead of large prints. Painting the outer border of your ceiling in the same color as the wall paint creates the illusion of height in rooms with low ceilings.
• Use strong lighting. Buyers love spaces with light, so use maximum watt light bulbs wherever necessary.
• Add colorful pillows. If you can’t afford custom sewn accessories, you can mimic a custom look with pillows. Get plenty of colorful pillows in a few different, but coordinating fabrics and use them on your sofas and beds. You can also add throws and lampshades in colorful fabrics.
• Hide anything that’s personal to you. New potential buyers want to visualize themselves in your home. If you keep your family portrait, collection of beanie babies or your child’s toys in the house, you’re not helping them do that.
• Add more space. Unclutter your home and create large, simple areas. Remember, it may look beautiful to you, but it may look cluttered and messy to a potential buyer. So go get rid of that shelf with the porcelain plates that has been hanging above your kitchen window since 1989 and create open spaces that are sophisticated enough for 2008.
• Use yellow flowers. Yellow flowers have shown to influence homebuyers positively, so make sure that it’s the first thing that your visitors see when they walk into your home. (Must be the warm, inviting color.)
• Bring out architectural details with strong colors. If you have a unique wall, paint it in a strong, vivid color while you keep the rest of the walls neutral.

One of the great books that never fails to inspire us is Jackie von Tobel’s Design Directory of Window Treatments. It’s filled with amazing illustrations of luxurious curtains. We are currently looking at her book’s illustrations to help inspire our next designs. Many of our customers have asked us about arched valances so we are currently creating custom designs and patterns for our next line of products.

However, having recently visited Jackie’s website, we found that she is currently working on a new book about bedding designs. We were fortunate enough to have a sneak peak at some illustrations in her blog (Jackie sure does care of her fans). Here are a few of the amazing illustrations that we can expect:

The following are seven easy tips to help you get your home clean and organized.

Keep a planner. Just saying “I need to do this,” is not enough. Get yourself a brand-new planner. Before you do anything, give it a special spot where you will keep it at all times. Keep it on your refrigerator door, put it by the kitchen phone, or keep it in your top drawer of your nightstand. In this special planner, write down little notes on a regular basis as you do your everyday chores and activities. If you’re the traveling kind of person, make sure that your planner is small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket. Today’s lives are hectic and unless a problem gets taken care of immediately, it’s very likely to be forgotten. So next time your husband tells you he can’t pick up Junior from his best friend’s birthday party two weeks from now because he has a business meeting, don’t just stash this information away in your forgettable mind. Write it down. Then, when that day arrives, you’ll open your planner and be reminded.

Review each day. After dinner, find about 10 minutes of alone time to sit down and think of all the things that need to be done. Think about today’s day. Is there anything that you’ve learned? Anything that you could’ve done better or can improve next time? Write down your thoughts in your planner as well as things that have to get done tomorrow so that you can be better prepared tomorrow. Many busy people find it very hard to fall asleep at night because they obsess with all the things that they didn’t get to do instead of sleeping. This 10-minute planning time will help you take off some of that stress and unwind.

Lose the all-or-nothing attitude. When it comes to chores, many people fail to multi-task. Instead, they get buried and possessed by a single task that takes away their entire day. It’s good to fully complete a task, but in a time where dozens of things need to get done, it may not be the best decision. If you have a big task that needs a whole day to do and you have to make dinner, do laundry and run errands (etc.) as well, make a plan to finish that task over a period of several days instead of one.

Make each day specific to a task. Make a list of things that you do on a weekly basis. Then, allocate each to a specific day. For example, since the weekend is usually the time for families to be together and the time to have guests over, make Friday your house cleaning day. Thursday is a great day for grocery shopping. You’ll avoid the Friday grocery store crowd and stock up your fridge just in time for the weekend. Monday is a great day to do laundry. Kid’s clothing can get quite dirty during their weekend play dates. Also, having done laundry on a Monday ensures that your family will have plenty of clean clothes for work and school during the rest of the week.

Pick one day per month for some serious devotion to your home. Pick one day each month during which you know you’ll be free from work and any chores. Use this day to do something special for your home. Organize your pantry, repaint the laundry room, clean all your bedding, curtains and cushions, or wash all your windows.

Get your family involved. Here’s a great opportunity to create long-lasting, loving bonds in your family. Get everyone involved with keeping your home in great shape. Sit down with your husband and come up with a serious agreement. The more directly you express your thoughts, the better your husband will understand how he can help. Remember, men are not as intuitive as women are, so make sure that he understands what each person’s responsibilities are. Small kids need to be taught from an early age. Of course, you can’t expect much from them, but as long as you make it fun and involve their imagination, they will learn discipline without even knowing it. Set up rewards for your kids and make sure to take breaks often and allow them to play.

Have a day off. Once a week, pick one day where you will completely forget all your chores. But, you must devote this time for yourself, otherwise it will be wasted time. Fill your tub with warm water and enjoy a luxurious bath, go to the library and check out a novel, do a crafts project or try to learn a new language. It doesn’t matter what it is - all that matters is that it makes you happy.

1. Without a doubt, J.K. Rowling is one of the most popular authors of our time. So it’s not a surprise that Amazon.com is getting ready to publish a special-edition, especially beautiful book by J.K. Rowling just in time for the winter holidays. J.K. Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard special edition features leather-binded books, with one book being embedded inside another larger “book”. Open the large book and you will find the real book wrapped in a red velvet pouch. And the good news is that the proceeds from the sale of this book go to charity. However, you will have to wait until December to get Rowling’s special edition book.
2. Oxford has gathered the British novelist Jane Austen’s works in a beautiful Six Volume Set. Despite having written her masterpieces over two centuries ago, Jane Austen still tells her stories through her books. What makes this six volume set so beautiful? Besides the almost perfect size and high quality hardcovers, the true beauty of each book lies inside. The books have remained true to British writing as it was during Austen’s lifetime. The font is reminiscent of olden times and the bottom of each page includes the first word that is found on the next page. Details like these are representative of books printed in the past centuries and that’s what makes these books so beautiful.
3. Amanda Byrne may have had us in mind when she wrote The Secret Gratitude Book. The book is gorgeous on the outside. It doesn’t open like a regular book. Instead, it has a magnetic flap that opens up like an envelope. Its brown color and illustration of a sealing wax mark give it a nostalgic look. However, much of the book is blank as it is intended to be used as a journal to write down all the things you’re grateful for. It’s perfect for our purposes!

These are only three examples out of an infinite number of books that can be found all around the world. However, they may be just enough to inspire you. Next time you get ready for a decorating project, why not stop by your thrift store and look for beautiful hardcover books?

One of the reasons why you bought a custom window treatment is probably the fabric. Custom window treatments are simply made with better quality fabrics. Naturally, they are not something you can toss in the washing machine every now and then. In fact, you shouldn’t!

It may have been just fine to toss a storebought window treatment into the washing machine, but a custom window treatment should be treated differently. Just like you wouldn’t toss a tuxedo or silk ballgown into your washer and dryer, you shouldn’t do that with custom window treatments, either. Those window garments belong to a whole new pile of laundry. Custom window treatments should be dry-cleaned only, preferably at least once every year. In between dry cleaning, you can do plenty to maintain a window treatment. Let’s face it, window treatments hang on your window 24/7. They absorb moisture, dust and fumes that constantly circulate in your home.

Custom window treatments are quite easy to keep clean. All you need is a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Using low suction, you should try to vacuum your window treatments at least once every two months. Remember, the more you wait, the more dirt the fabric absorbs and the harder it becomes to get it out. Instead of waiting for dirt to settle, think about adding cleaning your window treatments to your house cleaning routine.

When cleaning draperies, clean in between pleats and folds with vertical up and down strokes. Pay special attention to the bottom hem of draperies and the top of cornices as that is where most of the dirt tends to settle. Don’t forget to also clean the backside of your custom window treatment. Some clients have asked us whether vacuuming prevents sun-rotting of custom window treatments. Sun-rotting is usually not of great concern with custom curtains because they are lined for the most part. You will more than likely have replaced them long before they start to be affected by sun damage. Vacuuming, for the most part, is a preventive measure against dust or dirt that may settle in custom window coverings.


If you encounter a stain, try to stay away from those fancy products that claim to get stains out. They may work on some other fabrics, but we’ve found them to be too strong for window treatments. Some darken the fabric and others leave an oily residue. Instead, try some mild soap and water. Be gentle and rub the fabric minimally in a circular motion. It is better to have a small stain and fix it a little bit with some soap and water than use harsh cleaning materials and excessive rubbing to destroy the fabric (and in some cases, make the stain even bigger).
If you make a mistake in cleaning or the stain is too visible, you can always try to buy fabric paint and use it to fill in little spots to hide the stain.

Use your judgment and see what works best for your particular fabric and window treatment. If in doubt, there are always local dry cleaning professionals who clean fabrics on a daily basis to give you great advice.
