One of the most frustrating and difficult problems to solve in a small bathroom is a lack of storage space. It can seem impossible to find space for your extra toilet paper, towels, and other necessary bathroom items. If your small bathroom does not have enough storage space, there are some things you can do to maximize your space and find room for all of the essentials!
Keep the Bathroom Floor Clear
Keeping as much open floor space as possible will give the visual illusion that your bathroom is larger (yes, we know, but the lack of storage space doesn't make the floor a place to put towels exactly). When possible, mount cabinets and other storage units on the wall. If you have storage that can not be moved off of the floor, maximize that space by continuing the storage upward as high as possible.
Simple floor-to-ceiling shelves are an easy and economical storage solution. Custom shelves can be built easily; or, if you do not have any carpentry skills, pre-fabricated shelving units can be purchased cheaply. One of the least expensive shelving units to buy is a small set of utility shelves. The industrial look blends well with contemporary design, and many utility shelf sets can have additional shelves added to make them taller.
Use these kind of shelves to store your towels and other bathroom linens. Higher shelves are a good place for surplus paper goods. If you don't want all of your toiletries exposed, find large baskets that fit on the shelves and use them as drawers.
Maximize Bathroom Cabinet Space
Cabinet space in small bathrooms should be used to its fullest potential. In medicine cabinets and other cupboards with interior shelves, use small containers like jars and baskets to organize small items like tweezers, nail clippers, and tubes of ointment.
Often, the most neglected storage space is underneath the sink. If you have a cabinet under your bathroom sink, maximize the space around the plumbing. If possible, install at least one shelf inside the cabinet. If a shelf cannot be installed, look for s small set of plastic drawers or other plastic storage containers that will fit in the allotted space.
Use Your Unused Spaces
In a small bathroom, every square inch of space counts. Look for small spaces that are not serving any function and find or build storage to fit in these spaces. Utilizing these unused spaces could potentially give you a lot more storage space without taking up valuable floor space.
One area that is often overlooked and unused is the space between fixtures and the wall. If there is a gap between your sink or toilet and the wall, measure the space and look for a tall, skinny storage unit that will fit into the space. Some companies even make such storage cabinets for beside the toilet that have shelves perfectly sized for holding toilet paper.
In Small Rooms, Be Creative
The key to getting the most out of storage space in a small bathroom is to be creative. Take measurements of any odd spaces and look for items that could be repurposed as bathroom storage, such as wooden crates or spice racks. A little ingenuity will go a long way in creating plenty of space for your bathroom essentials!
